Elk Park Schoolhouse Mission:

Our mission is to instill a love of learning that is free from governmental dictates and to provide an environment that fosters creativity, independent thought, and the ability to reason and use logic to solve problems.

Overview of our school:

Elk Park Schoolhouse is a small, privately owned school that does not receive any government funding.  We are currently accepting children in grades K-6 and enrollment is limited to 10 children per teacher.  Children will retain the same state certified teacher as they progress through a 12th grade graduation.  We have a 6 week on / 2 week off schedule with a 5 week summer break.  All major holidays and spring break follow the Bayfield and Durango school districts.  The 9am-1pm schedule allows children time to focus on academics, while leaving the rest of the day for family time, extracurricular activities and play.  Our optional 3pm dismissal time gives parents added flexibility.

At Elk Park students are required to respect others, be kind, work hard and have a positive attitude.  Not only will our students develop a solid foundation in reading, writing, science and math, but they will also learn life skills that are essential to a productive and happy life.   Learning comes through making mistakes and we teach kids to never stop trying.  School should not be a babysitter, rather it should be a safe space where teachers and parents work together to open doors.  We value God and country and teach kids to learn from our history and appreciate our amazing country.
